SYMPTOMS

When you start Windows 98 Setup, you may receive the following error message:
W98Setup caused a general protection fault in module w98setup.bin at 0003:00000856. Setup cannot continue.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you start Setup from a network resource whose Universal Naming Convention (UNC) path contains more than 240 characters.

Setup uses a string buffer for installation. This string buffer has a character limit of 240 characters. If you try to run Setup from a path that exceeds this limit, you receive the error message.

RESOLUTION

Place the Windows 98 installation files in a folder whose UNC path contains no more than 240 characters.
