SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install a program from your CD-ROM drive, you may receive the following error message
ISSET_SE caused a general protection fault in module file name at memory address
where file name is the name of the program file you are trying to run, and memory address is the memory address at which the error occurs.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if any of the following conditions exist:
Norton AntiVirus version 4.04 is installed and Norton AutoProtect is enabled.
You use LiveUpdate for Norton AntiVirus to download an updated version of Norton AntiVirus.
Microsoft IntelliPoint software is installed on your computer, and the Point32 program is currently running.
Microsoft IntelliMouse or Microsoft IntelliMouse Trackball software is installed on your computer, and the Mswheel program is currently running.

Warning This workaround may make your computer or your network more vulnerable to attack by malicious users or by malicious software such as viruses. We do not recommend this workaround but are providing this information so that you can implement this workaround at your own discretion. Use this workaround at your own risk.

Note An antivirus program is designed to help protect your computer from viruses. You must not download or open files from sources that you do not trust, visit Web sites that you do not trust, or open e-mail attachments when your antivirus program is disabled.

To work around this behavior, use the appropriate method, and then attempt to install the program again.

Norton AutoProtect Is Enabled

Disable Norton AutoProtect Mode. To do so, on the taskbar right-click the Norton icon, and then click Disable.

You Use LiveUpdate to Download Norton AntiVirus

Obtain the latest version of LiveUpdate for Norton AntiVirus from Symantec's Web site. For more information about how to obtain LiveUpdate, contact Symantec Technical Support.

The Point32 Program Is Running

Quit the Point32 program by pressing CTRL+ALT+DELETE to open the Close Program dialog box, click Point32, click End Task, and then click End Task again.

The Mswheel Program Is Running

Quit the Mswheel program by pressing CTRL+ALT+DELETE to open the Close Program dialog box, click Mswheel, click End Task, and then click End Task again.

MORE INFORMATION

Disabling the Load AutoProtect At Startup option on the AutoProtect tab does not disable AutoProtect.
