OL97: Error Received Installing SR-2 Patch If Using Outlook 8.01

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install the Microsoft Office 97 Service Release 2 (SR-2) Patch on a computer that has Microsoft Outlook 97 version 8.01 installed, you receive the following error message:
The Microsoft Office 97 SR-2 patch cannot be applied to your computer. Either Office 97 is not installed on this computer, or there are files from multiple versions of Office 97 on this computer. Try installing Office 97 or running the latest SR-1 patch to correct the problem. Or, contact Microsoft Technical Support for further assistance.

CAUSE

The Office 97 SR-2 Patch is designed to update the programs that are included in Office 97; however, version 8.01 of Outlook is not a part of Office 97.

RESOLUTION

To update Outlook version 8.01, you must first remove Outlook, and then install the complete compact disc (CD-ROM) version of Office 97 SR-2.
