SUMMARY

This article explains how to convert files that were created in WordPerfect version 6 or later into Word 2000 files.

Word 2000 provides a WordPerfect 6.x converter for opening files that are saved in the WordPerfect 6.x file format. WordPerfect versions 7.0 and 8.0 share a file format that is similar to WordPerfect 6.x, with some File Header changes.

You can use the WordPerfect 6.x converter to open in Word 2000 any files saved in the WordPerfect 6.0 or 6/7/8 format. WordPerfect 7.0 uses a default Save As format of WordPerfect 6.0, and WordPerfect 8.0 uses a default Save As format of the WordPerfect 6/7/8 format.

WordPerfect versions 7.0 and 8.0 also have alternative formats available, so you can save your file in a compatible format that Word 2000 can open, such as Word for Windows 6, and so on.

The WordPerfect 6.x converter is included with Word and is part of the Run from My Computer installation.

How to Convert a Document Created in a Version Later Than WordPerfect 6.0

To convert a WordPerfect 7.0 or 8.0 file that was not saved in the WordPerfect 6.0 or 6/7/8 (or compatible) format, you must open the file in WordPerfect and save it in a compatible format.

After you do this, open the file in Word. To do this, click Open on the File menu, select the file, and then click Open.

Troubleshooting

If Word does not convert the file correctly, follow these steps:
1.Close the WordPerfect file without saving it.
2.On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the General tab.
3.Select the Confirm conversion at open check box, and then click OK.
4.Open the WordPerfect file again.
5.If Text Only (*.txt) is selected in the Convert File dialog box, select WordPerfect 6.x, and then click OK.
You now are able to open the file successfully.
