SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to start Microsoft Notepad, you may receive the following error message:
NOTEPAD caused an invalid page fault in module NOTEPAD.EXE at address

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if either of the following conditions exists:
You are using a third-party display utility that is not compatible with Notepad.
The video adapter driver is damaged or is not compatible with Notepad.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, follow these steps:
1.Click Start, point to Run, type msconfig, and then click OK.
2.Click Advanced, click the VGA 640x480x16 check box to select it, click OK, and then click OK again.
3.Click Yes when you are prompted to restart your computer.
If no error messages occur when you start Notepad, uninstall the third-party display utilities included with your video adapter. For information about how to do so, refer to the documentation included with your video adapter or contact the manufacturer.

If an error message still occurs when you start Notepad and you are not using any third-party display utilities, obtain an updated driver for your video adapter. For information about how to do so, contact your video adapter's manufacturer.
