SYMPTOMS

During the installation of BackOffice Small Business Server (SBS) 4.5, you may receive a dialog box that prompts you to type a Microsoft Office 2000 CD Key number. This occurs even though Office 2000 is not included with SBS.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the installation of Microsoft Outlook 2000 uses the Office 2000 installation program, which is called during the SBS upgrade.

An Office 2000 installation is customized using a Microsoft Software Installer (.msi) file to configure Outlook 2000 for installation on the server. However, this installation program is not customized for Outlook 2000, which is why you receive a dialog box prompting you for an Office 2000 CD Key number.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the Outlook 2000 CD Key number listed on the back of the Outlook 2000 CD-ROM case. Because Outlook 2000 is part of Office 2000, the Outlook 2000 CD Key number is accepted as a valid key number.
