Works/HP 2000: "Error 1324" During Installation

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install one of the programs listed in the "Applies to" section of this article, you may receive the following error message:
Error 1324: The folder path folder name contains an invalid character.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if all the following conditions are true:
The Microsoft Windows Installer file is damaged or is not installed properly.
Your CD-ROM drive uses a real mode (16-bit) driver.
The microprocessor (CPU) installed in your computer does not meet the minimum system requirements needed to run the program.
You try to install the program on a computer that does not have enough hard disk space.

To resolve this issue, use the following methods in the order that they appear.

Verify the Performance Status of Your Computer

To verify the performance status of your computer, follow these steps:
1.Right-click My Computer.
2.Click Properties.
3.Click the Performance tab.

If you see the "Your system is configured for optimal performance" message under Performance Status, your computer is using 32-bit CD-ROM drivers.

If you see a message that states that some drives are using MS-DOS compatibility under Performance Status, you may be using real mode (16-bit) CD-ROM drivers. If this is the case, you may not be able to read certain files on the CD.

Contact the manufacturer of your CD-ROM drive to obtain an updated, protected mode driver for your CD-ROM drive. For information about how to contact your CD-ROM manufacturer, view the following hardware and software third-party vendor contact information: http://support.microsoft.com/gp/vendors/en-us (http://support.microsoft.com/gp/vendors/en-us)
4.Close Properties.
5.Double-click My Computer.
6.Right-click drive where drive is drive letter of the hard disk where Microsoft Windows is installed.
7.Click Properties.
8.On the General tab, note the quantity of available hard disk space under Free space.
Microsoft Works 2000 Standard requires 135-150 megabytes (MB) of available hard disk space.
Microsoft Works Suite 2000 requires 820 MB of available hard disk space.
9.Click OK, and then close the My Computer window.
10.To verify the microprocessing power of your CPU, see the documentation that is included with your computer, or contact your hardware manufacturer.
Works 2000 Standard requires a Multimedia PC with a Pentium 90 megahertz (MHz) or higher processor.
Works Suite 2000 requires a Multimedia PC with a Pentium 166 MHz or higher processor.
