Cannot Remove the Driver for the PS/2 Mouse in Device Manager

SYMPTOMS

When you replace a PS/2 mouse with a Universal Serial Bus (USB) mouse, Device Manager installs the USB mouse, but it leaves the PS/2 driver installed. If you remove the PS/2 driver listing within Device Manager, and then restart your computer, the PS/2 driver is redetected and reinstalled. The PS/2 driver listing remains in Device Manager and it has a yellow exclamation mark on it.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because Device Manager reports the PS/2 mouse port as active even though a PS/2 mouse is not installed.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, contact the hardware manufacturer of your computer for specific instructions on how to disable the PS/2 mouse port within your computer's BIOS.
