SYMPTOMS

When you use Netscape Navigator version 6.x to browse to a Web page that has embedded Windows Media Player content, the embedded media content may not be displayed. Instead of the Windows Media Player content, a blank box with a Click here to get the plug-in icon in the center of the box is displayed.

If you click the Click here to get the plug-in icon, the Windows Media Player 7 download page is displayed. If you download and install Windows Media Player 7 and return to the previous Web page, the embedded media content still does not display in Netscape Navigator 6.x.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because either the Windows Media Player plug-ins for Netscape Navigator are not compatible with Netscape Navigator version 6.x and these plug-ins are unable to play an embedded stream or file. This behavior is not observed with the same Windows Media Player plug-ins with the earlier versions of Netscape Navigator 4.x.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, remove Netscape Navigator version 6.x and install the earlier version of Netscape Communicator 4.x, which includes Netscape Navigator and installs the Windows Media Player plug-in for Netscape Navigator.

MORE INFORMATION

This behavior can also occur with Windows Media Player 6.4 and Netscape Navigator 6.0 for Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional, Windows 95, and Windows 98. Windows Media Player 7 and 7.1 do not automatically install the Netscape Navigator plug-in.
