SYMPTOMS

SharePoint Portal Server Setup fails and you may receive the following error message:
MSDAIPP.DLL Failed to Register

CAUSE

SharePoint Portal Server uses this dynamic link library (DLL) to install the product. The data managed by this component is stored in the Application Data folder. If this folder exists on a remote network server (based on your group policy or roaming profile settings), the component will not successfully store data, and therefore, will return the registration failure error message.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, manually create the following folder:
%appdata%\Microsoft\Msdaipp
For example, if your Application Data folder resides on a network share \\server\profileshare\%username%, create the folder \\server\profileshare\%username%\AppData\Microsoft\Msdaipp.
