COM Ports Remain in Device Manager After Modem Is Removed

SYMPTOMS

After you remove an internal modem that is assigned to a communications port not on your computer, the port still appears in the Device Manager.

WORKAROUND

To manually remove this port from the Device Manager, do the following:
1.Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2.Double-click the System icon.
3.Click the Device Manager tab, then double-click Ports.
4.Click the communications port (COMx) you want to remove.

MORE INFORMATION

After installing an internal modem and assigning it to a COM port that does not physically exist on your computer, the port appears in the Device Manager. After removing this adapter, the port is not deleted from the Device Manager.
