Event ID 1008: Open Procedure in "RASRAD.DLL" Failed

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to add a counter in Performance Monitor on your Routing and Remote Access Service (RRAS) Server, you may notice that Event Viewer logs the following event message in the application event log:

   Event ID   : 1008
   Source     : Perflib
   Description: The Open Procedure for service "RasRad" in DLL "rasrad.dll"
                failed. Performance data for this service will not be
                available. Status code returned is DWORD 0.

CAUSE

Your RRAS Server was originally setup for only LAN Routing and Demand-Dial Routing.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
1.Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe or Regedit.exe)and go to the following subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasRad\Performance
2.Delete the value "Open."
3.Restart your computer for this change to take effect.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Routing and Remote Access in Windows NT version 4.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
