DirectX 6.0 Err Msg: Your Operating System Is Windows 98

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install Microsoft DirectX 6.0, you may receive the following error message:
Your operating system is Windows 98. To install DirectX on Windows 98, please select DirectX 6 from the Windows Update Web site.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you attempt to install the Microsoft Windows 95 version of DirectX 6.0 on a Windows 98-based computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, download and install the Windows 98 version of DirectX 6.0. To do so, use the following method:


Download and run the Dx6core.exe file from the following Microsoft Web site:
http://www.microsoft.com/directx (http://www.microsoft.com/directx)

The Dx6core.exe file contains the core files for DirectX 6.0.

You can use the Dxcore.exe file to install DirectX 6.0 on all language versions of Windows 98. You do not need to install additional drivers to install DirectX 6.0 on Windows 98.
