Use one of the following methods if you want to keep some, but not all of the earlier versions of the Office programs that are currently installed on your computer.

Method 1: Remove Programs That You Do Not Want to Keep Before You Run Office 2000 Setup

You can use the setup program for the earlier version of Office to remove the programs that you do not want to keep. The following steps illustrate how to keep the programs that you want from Microsoft Office 97.

1.

Remove the Office 97 programs that you do not want to keep. To do this, follow these steps: a. Insert your Microsoft Office 97 CD into your CD-ROM drive. b. On the Windows Start menu, click Settings, and then click Control Panel. Double-click Add/Remove Programs. c. Click Microsoft Office 97 in the list of available programs, and then click Add/Remove. d. Click Add/Remove in the Microsoft Office 97 Setup dialog box. e. Click to clear the check box for any programs that you want to remove from your computer. For example, clear the check box next to Microsoft Word if you want to remove Word 97 from your computer. f. Click Continue. Click Yes in the Confirm Component Removal dialog box. g. When setup has completed successfully, click OK .

Install Office 2000. To keep the existing Office programs that are still on your computer, follow these steps: a. Insert your Microsoft Office 2000 CD into your CD-ROM drive. b. Start Office 2000 setup. c. Type the appropriate user information and the correct CD Key in the Welcome to Microsoft Office 2000 dialog box and then click Next. d. Click I accept the terms of the License Agreement and then click Next. e. Click Customize.... f. If you are upgrading from Microsoft Office 97, you need to specify a non-default installation folder for Office 2000. For example, type c:\program files\office2000 in the Install Office 2000 at: box. Click Next. g. Click Keep these programs in the Microsoft Office 2000: Removing Previous Versions dialog box, and then click Next. h. Choose the appropriate option in the Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 Upgrade dialog box and then click Next. i. Choose the Office 2000 features that you want to install and then click Install Now.

Method 2: Use the Microsoft Office Custom Installation Wizard to Specify Which Programs to Keep

You can use the Microsoft Office Custom Installation Wizard to specify which programs to keep when you run Office 2000 setup. To do this, follow these steps:

1.	Start the Custom Installation Wizard.
2.	Click Next in the Welcome to the Custom Installation Wizard dialog box.
3.	Click Browse in the Open the MSI File dialog box. Select the Data1.msi file on your Microsoft Office 2000 CD and then click Open. Click Next.
4.	Click Next in the Open the MST File dialog box.
5.	Type an appropriate name and path for the new MST file that you will use to customize setup in the Name and path of MST file: box. Click Next.
6.	Change the Default installation path: box in the Specify Default Path and Organization dialog box. Because you want to keep one or more of the Office programs that are already installed on your hard drive, you cannot specify an existing Office installation location. For example, modify the path to <Program Files>\Office 2000. Click Next.
7.	Click Remove the following versions of Microsoft Office applications; Setup does not display the Remove Previous Versions panel.
8.	Clear the box beside of any Office program that you want to keep.
9.	Click Finish to create the MST file.
10.	Click Exit to close the Custom Installation Wizard.
11.	On the Windows Start menu, click Run. Type <CD-ROM drive letter>\setup.exe transforms=<Path to MST file>, where <CD-ROM drive letter> is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive and <Path to MST file> is the full path to your MST file. For example, if your CD-ROM drive is drive E and the MST file created by the Custom Installation Wizard is named CustomRemove.mst, then you would type the following: e:\setup.exe transforms="c:\my documents\CustomRemove.mst"
