FIX: SP5a Regression: Access Violations with Tempdb Deadlocking, Attentions

SYMPTOMS

Under high tempdb stress with deadlocking on system tables and attention signals (due to query timeouts or cancellations) you may receive access violations (AVs) or errors of type 603 or 803. These problems do not occur on SQL Server 6.5 versions earlier than SQL Server 6.5 Service Pack 5 and 5a.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in SQL Server version 6.5. This problem has been corrected in the Post Service Pack 5a Update for Microsoft SQL Server version 6.5. To install the Post Service Pack 5a Update, you must have either SQL Server 6.5 SP5 or SP5a installed.
