This behavior can occur if you copy and paste the Windows Messenger executable file to the desktop instead of creating a shortcut.

To resolve this behavior, make sure that the Windows Messenger icon on your desktop is a shortcut. If the icon is not a shortcut, delete the icon and then create a shortcut to Windows Messenger.
First, find out whether the Windows Messenger icon on your desktop is a shortcut:
| 1. | Right-click the icon, and then click Properties. Make sure that the Shortcut tabbed page is selected. |
| 2. | See whether the icon has an arrow in the lower left corner. If this arrow is present, the file is a shortcut. |
If the Windows Messenger icon is not a shortcut, delete the icon, and then create a new shortcut on your desktop:
| 1. | Right-click the icon, and then click Delete. |
| 2. | On the taskbar, click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Windows Explorer. |
| 3. | Browse to and then click the Messenger folder. |
| 4. | Right-click msmsgs, and then click Create Shortcut. |
| 5. | Drag the shortcut to the desktop. |
