SUMMARY

A .NET Passport uses your e-mail address to provide you with personalized access to Passport-enabled services and Web sites. .NET Passport implements a single sign-in service that allows you to create a single user name and password. This article explains how to set up .NET Passport accounts in Windows XP.

.NET Passport helps to protect your information by using powerful encryption technology and comprehensive privacy policies, and you are in control over which sites have access to the information that is stored in your passport, including your e-mail and mailing addresses, except as described in the .NET Passport Privacy Statement. .NET Passport also takes steps to help protect your privacy on public or shared computers.

Starting a .NET Passport Account

After you have a .NET Passport, you will have only one name and password to remember, and you will be able to use all .NET Passport-enabled services. You can store information about yourself in your sign-in profile, and therefore you will not have to retype this information when you use .NET Passport-enabled services.

To start the .NET Passport Wizard, click Start, click Control Panel, and then click User Accounts.

NOTE: The steps to perform this task differ depending on whether your computer is a member of a network domain, part of a workgroup, or a stand-alone computer.

Computers on a Domain

NOTE: You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group to complete this procedure.

For a Windows XP-based computer on a domain, follow these steps:
1.Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click User Accounts.
2.On the Advanced tab, click .NET Passport Wizard under Passwords and .NET Passports.
3.In the .NET Passport Wizard, follow the instructions as they appear on the screen.

Computers Not on a Domain

If you have an Administrator account, follow these steps:
1.Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click User Accounts.
2.Click your account name.
3.Click Set up my account to use a .NET Passport.
4.In the .NET Passport Wizard, follow the instructions as they appear on the screen.
If you have a limited account, follow these steps:
