Microsoft Access stops responding on Hewlett-Packard (HP) machines with Digital Persona Biometric device

Symptoms

Microsoft Access Office 2010 or Microsoft 2007 Office Access stops responding when you try to perform any of the following actions on an HP computer on which the Digital Persona Biometric Authentication Service is enabled:

  • Open a database that has a startup form
  • Import a Microsoft Office Excel spreadsheet
  • Open tables in Datasheet View
In the case of the third action, the first value in the first record of the table may be displayed correctly, but the rest of the datasheet is displayed as a blank white space. It may take several minutes for all the table contents to be displayed.

Cause

The issue occurs on HP computers on which HP ProtectTools Security Manager is installed and in which Security Manager includes Digital Persona's Biometric Authentication Service (a fingerprint reader) or any other biometric device.

Resolution

Method 1

To resolve this issue, download the most recent version of HP ProtectTools Security Manager from the HP website. To do this, follow the appropriate steps for your kind of notebook.

For Consumer-grade notebooks ("HP Pavilion" or "HP Envy" or "HP Touchsmart")

  1. Visit the following HP website:
    http://search.hp.com
  2. Select Drivers and Downloads.
  3. Click Drivers & Software.
  4. Enter the full model number, and then press Search.
  5. If a list of notebook model numbers is displayed, select the specific model number of your notebook.
  6. On the menu, select Operating System, and then click Next.
  7. Select Software - Solutions.
  8. Select HP SimplePass by Digital Persona.
  9. Download the following executable file, as appropriate for your system:
  • 32-bit: SP55910.exe
  • 64-bit: SP55909.exe

For Windows 7 32-bit:

For Commercial-grade notebooks ("ProBook" or "Elitebook")

  1. Visit the following HP website:
       http://search.hp.com
  2. Select Drivers and Downloads.
  3. Click Drivers & Software.
  4. Enter the full model number, and then press Search.
  5. If a list of notebook model numbers is displayed, select the specific model number of your notebook.
  6. On the menu, select Operating System, and then click Next.
  7. From the Operating Systems list, select your system.
  8. Select Software - Security.
  9. Click the link for HP ProtectTools Security Manager.
  10. Click the Revision History tab.
  11. Select the most recent file version (5.1.0.736 or newer).
  12. Click Download to download the file.
  13. Run the executable to upgrade the fingerprint reader software.

Method 2

To resolve this issue, run Microsoft Access as an administator who has elevated priviliges each time that you open Access. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. In Windows Explorer, locate the msaccess.exe file in the following folder, as appropriate to your system:
    • 32-bit: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14
    • 64-bit: C:\Program Files (X86)\Microsoft Office\Office14
    Note If you experience the problem in Microsoft Access 2007, msaccess.exe will be in the Office12, rather than the Office14 folder.
  2. Right-click the msaccess.exe file.
  3. Click Run as adminstrator.

You can configure Microsoft Access to always run as administrator. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. In Windows Explorer, locate the msaccess.exe file in the following folder, as appropriate to your system:
    • 32-bit: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14
    • 64-bit: C:\Program Files (X86)\Microsoft Office\Office14
  2. Right-click the msaccess.exe file.
  3. Select Properties.
  4. Select the Compatibility tab.
  5. Under Priviliege Level, click to select the Run this program as an administrator check box.

Note You must be logged on to the computer as a member of the local administrators group to perform this operation. When you restart Microsoft Access, click to allow the changes if you receive the following User Account Control message: "Do you want to allow the following program to make changes to this computer? Program: Microsoft Access."

Method 3

In the case of the third action that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section (in which it takes several minutes for all the table contents to be displayed in Datasheet view), open the Access table first in Design view, and then switch to Datasheet view.

If installing the update (Method 1 in the "Public" section) does not resolve the issue, try the following methods, in this order:

Method 1

Reconfigure HP Security Manager (HP SimplePass Identity Protection):

  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, and then click HP SimplePass Identity Protection.
  2. Expand Password Manager, and then select Settings.
  3. Click to clear the prompt to add logons for logon screens option, and then clickApply.
  4. Restart Windows.

    Method 2

    Disable Digital Persona's Biometric Authentication Service:

    1. In the Start Search box, type msconfig, and then click msconfig.exe.
    2. In the System Configuration window, click the Services tab, and locateBiometric Authentication Service (manufacturer Digital Persona).
    3. Click to clear check box for the service, and then click Apply.
    4. Close the System Configuration window, and then restart Windows.

    If you require more detailed information about these steps, you should contact HP. The updated version of the HP Security Manager includes a disclaimer from HP that version 5.1.0.736 should be considered to be a beta version of the product.

    Early reports indicated that the problem seemed to be limited to HP machines that featured a fingerprint reader or some other biometric authentication device. Following those reports, the Biometric Authentication Service began to ship together with several HP models, including several models that did not feature a fingerprint reader or a similar device. Because the service seems to be currently packaged as part of the HP Security Tools suite, the problem seems to be more widespread.
