After a failed update to windows using the Windows Update service, the BuildNotification.exe application may fail to start and report an error that resembles the following in the Application Log:
Framework Version: v4.0.30319
Description: The process was terminated due to an unhandled exception.
Exception Info: System.IO.FileNotFoundException
Stack: at Microsoft.TeamFoundation.Build.Notifications.BuildNotificationApp.Main()
The issue occurs because of a failed update to the system using the Windows Update Service corrupts some ngen'd images that the BuildNotification.exe application depend upon. The failure to load the ngen'd images causes the BuildNotification.exe application to crash upon startup.
1. Open a command prompt as an administrator.
2. Run the command ngen /update
3. Once the command has finished, reboot the system.
