Currency values not flagged as number entered as text

If you have an Excel file with text representing currency, and open it on another system where the decimal separator is different. Excel does not error check numbers stored as text.

For example, the text value “$3.45” opened on a German system will not be flagged, and “$3,45” will not be flagged on a US system.

Excel does not check all possible locales when determining whether a text string could be interpreted as a number.

This behavior is by design and intentional.

More Information

This behavior also can be seen with dates formats.
It also happens with other languages besides German.
