How to enable Group Chat Console logging for the Group Chat client

The Group Chat client provides two levels of logging. The default level of logging is known as INFO and the debug level of logging is known as ALL. The information listed below details how to update the Group Chat client logging to ALL from the default logging value of INFO.

Note In reference to system folder and registry locations the text “Group Chat Console” may be referred to “Group Chat Client”.

  1. Choose Start and then Run from the desktop of the Windows client based computer that is hosting the Group Chat client
  2. Type in %appdata%\Microsoft\Group Chat\Group Chat Console and click on the OK button
  3. Open the GroupChatConsoleLogger.xml file for editing
  4. Locate the <log4mgc> XML element
  5. Underneath the <log4mgc> XML element locate the <level value="INFO"/> XML element and its value parameter
  6. Update the <level value="INFO"/> value parameter to <level value="ALL"/>
  7. This change will update logging on the Group Chat Server to debug level from the default informational level of logging

    Note Updating the level value parameter to <level value="NONE"/> will disable logging for the Group Chat client
  8. Underneath the <log4mgc> XML element locate <file value=""/> XML element and value parameter. The Group Chat Server will save the log files at the location that is noted in the <file value=""/> XML element and value parameter. The default location should be %appdata%\Microsoft\Group Chat\Group Chat Console\Logs.
  9. When editing the GroupChatConsoleLogger.xml file is completed, save the changes to the file before closing it

  1. Choose Start and then Run from the desktop of the Windows client based computer that is hosting the Group Chat client
  2. Type in regedit and click on the OK button
  3. Use the registry editor to locate the following registry key
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Tracing\uccapi\GroupChatConsole
  4. If the following registry values are not listed here then add them

    Value name: EnableFileTracing
    Value type: REG_DWORD
    Value data: 1(True) 0(False)

    Value name: EnableConsoleTracing
    Value type: REG_DWORD
    Value data: 1(True) 0(False)

    Value name: EnableDebuggerTracing
    Value type: REG_DWORD
    Value data: 1(True) 0(False)
  5. The Group Chat Server uccapi logging will be stored at the location that is stored in the following registry entry

    Value name: FileDirectory
    Value type: REG_SZ
    Value data: 1(True) 0(False)
The default location for log file storage on the Group Chat Server is the %userprofile%\tracing folder
