Use Groove with Narrator

Groove works with Narrator, a built-in screen reader that reads text on your screen aloud and describes events, so you can use your PC with partial or no vision. There are keyboard shortcuts to help you do common actions.

Start Narrator

Press the Windows logo key  + Enter to start Narrator. Press these keys again to stop Narrator. On many keyboards, the Windows logo key is located on the bottom row of keys, to the left or right of the Alt key.

Open the app

To open the the Movies & TV app, press the Windows logo key  , type “Movies & TV,” and then press Enter. To close the app, press Alt + F4.

Landmarks

Groove has 4 main landmarks:

  • Main
  • Search
  • Navigation
  • Now playing

Navigation

Groove consists of a navigation pane, a search box, a pane containing play controls and details about the currently playing song, and lists of music (artists, albums, playlists, etc.) that can be sorted and filtered.

Keyboard shortcuts

The following keyboard shortcuts are available in the app.

Common tasks

Add music

The first time you open it, Groove will automatically add any music files in your Windows Music folder.

To add music from other locations:

  1. Tab to Settings and press Spacebar.
  2. Tab to Choose where we look for music and follow the instructions.

Play music

There are several different ways to play your music.

Shuffle everything

  1. Press Tab until you get to the Shuffle all button. To sort and filter your music before playing, Tab to Sort by, Filter, or Genre and make your selections.
  2. When Shuffle all button is in focus, pressing Spacebar will shuffle-play all of your music.

Control playback

Tab to the now-playing area for any of the following:

  • Song title and artist name (when focused is here, press Spacebar to open the list of now playing songs and access the control for saving them as a playlist)
  • Song position: Narrator will tell you how far into the current song you are; use Right and Left arrows to jump backward and forward within the song
  • Controls for starting the current song over, jumping to the previous song, and skipping to the next song

Search for music

  1. Tab to Search box.
  2. Type your search phrase and press Enter.
  3. Tab through your results and press Spacebar to select something.

Browse albums

  1. Tab to Albums, then press Spacebar to open the albums list.
  2. Use the Right, Left, Down, and Up arrows to browse albums.
  3. When you’re focused on one you want to hear, press Spacebar to select it.
  4. Press Spacebar again to Play all songs, or Tab to the songs list and use the Down and Up arrows to choose a song. Once you’ve focused on a song you want, press Enter to select it, and press Enter once more to play it.

Browse artists

  1. Tab to Albums, then use the Down arrow to go to Artists.
  2. Press Spacebar to open the artists list.
  3. Use Right, Left, Down, and Up arrows to browse artists.
  4. When you’re focused on an artist you want, press Spacebar to select them.
  5. Press Spacebar again to Play all songs, or Tab to the albums list and use the Down and Up arrows to choose an album.
  6. When you’re focused on one you want to hear, press Spacebar to select it.
  7. Press Spacebar again to Play all songs, or Tab to the songs list and use the Down and Up arrows to choose a song. Once you’ve focused on a song you want, press Enter to select it and press Enter once more to play it.

Browse songs

  1. Tab your way to Albums, then use the Down arrow to go to Songs.
  2. Use the Down arrow to scroll through songs.
  3. When you arrive at one you want to hear, press Enter twice to play.
