How to disable the “Get the Apps” notification in an Office 2016 application

When you use a Microsoft Office 2016 application with an Office 365 Business or Office 365 Business Premium subscription, you may receive the following notification on the Message bar :

WORD FOR YOUR SMARTPHONE View and edit documents with Word on your smartphone – Get the Apps

Asset not found 

This notification can be disabled by adding the following registry value:

 Location Name Type Data
 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\TargetedMessagingServiceDisableTargetedMessaging  DWORD (32-bit) 00000001


  • The notification will be displayed every 24 hours unless it's disabled by the registry value.

  • Currently, there's no Group Policy template available for this configuration.

To add the registry value, follow the steps.

Important Follow the steps in this section carefully. Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Before you modify it, back up the registry for restoration in case problems occur.

  1. Go to Start and search on Run. You can also press on the Windows Key + R to bring up the Run window.
  2. In the Run window, type regedit. Find the following registry key: 


    If the Common key does not contain TargetedMessagingService, you must manually create it as follows:  

    A. Click Common.
    B. On the Edit menu, click New > Key, and then name the new key as "TargetedMessagingService."
  3.  Create the following value in TargetedMessagingService:

    Name: DisableTargetedMessaging
    Type: DWORD (32-Bit)
    Data:  00000001
