When you open a workbook, or change the font for a cell, you receive the following error message:

Not enough memory.

This problem occurs when the number of fonts in the workbook approaches or exceeds 255. Note that Excel counts fonts of different sizes as separate fonts. For example, Excel counts Arial 10 point and Arial 12 point as two fonts.

You receive the error message when you do either of the following:

  • You open a workbook that was created in Microsoft Excel 2000 and saved in the Microsoft Excel 97-2000 & 5.0/95 Workbook (*.xls) format.

  • You change the font for a cell in a workbook.

To work around this error message, follow these steps:

  1. Unhide any hidden worksheets. (On the Format menu, point to Sheet, and then click Unhide.)
  2. Hold down SHIFT and click each worksheet tab to select all worksheets.
  3. Press CTRL+A to select all cells.
  4. On the Format menu, click Style.
  5. In the Style name list, click Normal.
  6. Click to clear every check box except for the Font check box.
  7. Click OK. Save the workbook.
All fonts now have the same size and name, which eliminates the error message.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
