"Directory Name Is Invalid" Starting Shortcut with Run As

Symptoms

When you attempt to start a shortcut by using the Run As feature in Windows 2000, you may receive the following error message:

The directory name is invalid

Cause

The user specified for the Run As feature does not have access to the folder or share that is specified in the shortcut's Start In setting.

Resolution

Grant the user permissions to the folder or share that is specified in the shortcut's Start In setting. Or, change the Start In setting in the shortcut to a folder to which the user has permissions.

Status

This behavior is by design.

More Information

In Windows 2000, you can run a shortcut on the desktop under the context of another user. This allows a user to run a shortcut with his or her logon credentials while another user is logged on to the computer.

When you use the Run As feature of a shortcut, you can specify the logon name, password, and domain for the user who is starting the shortcut. You can also specify where the program will be started from by using the Start In box.
