PRB: Japanese Windows 98 SE Setup Error Message: Fault in MS-DOS Extender

When you run the Microsoft Windows 98 SE Setup program from the Japanese Product CD-ROM, you may receive a fault in the Standard Mode DOS Extender. This problem usually occurs during the first phase of Windows 98 setup, when you are responding to Setup questions. The following hardware is required to see this problem:

  • An Intel Seattle-3 motherboard.
  • A M64 version of the Nvidia TNT2 AGP video card.
  • A Promise Ultra 66 IDE Controller card.
  • 512 megabytes (MB) of random access memory (RAM)
Other add-in cards do not seem to affect whether or not this fault will occur. An additional configuration uses the ATI Rage 128 AGP with or without additional cards. This tested configuration was supplied by DELL (Dimension XPS-T750).

You can work around this problem by starting up from a boot disk (Japanese) and running Emm386.exe without the "noems" switch. In addition, you can remove a DIMM, install the operating system, and then replace the DIMM. Also, if you have an English CD-ROM boot disk, the installation works correctly even if EMM386 is not present.

This behavior is by design.
