A USB device may not work when you start a Windows Vista-based computer or when you wake the computer from sleep

The third-party products that this article discusses are manufactured by companies that are independent of Microsoft. Microsoft makes no warranty, implied or otherwise, about the performance or reliability of these products.

When you start a Windows Vista-based computer, or when you wake the computer from sleep, a USB-connected device may not be recognized correctly. Because of this problem, you may experience any of the following issues:
  • A USB-based fingerprint reader may be unavailable for use at the Welcome screen. Therefore, you cannot log on to the computer by using the fingerprint reader.
  • A USB-based keyboard may be unavailable for use.
  • A USB-based mouse may be unavailable for use. The mouse pointer does not appear.

Note A wireless keyboard or a wireless mouse may communicate with a wireless receiver that is connected to a USB port.
  • A USB-based near field communication device (FeliCa) cannot be resumes from an S3 Sleep State (Standby).
This problem may occur only occasionally.

Note Certain USB devices may be integrated into the system, and they may be connected to an internal hub. For example, a portable computer may have a single USB bus. In this situation, the computer may use an internal USB hub to make two or more USB ports available on the computer.
