Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You use Internet Explorer 11 or Internet Explorer 10 to download a file from a specific URL.

  • The file is a type that cannot be rendered natively by Internet Explorer, such as a PDF file.

  • The server response does not provide any HTTP cache control directives.

In this scenario, Internet Explorer 11 and Internet Explorer 10 may reload the cached version of the file even if a newer version is available.

Note This issue does not occur in an HTML, CSS, JavaScript, or text file that's loaded within the browser.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, install the most recent cumulative security update for Internet Explorer. To do this, go to Microsoft Update. Additionally, see the technical information about the most recent cumulative security update for Internet Explorer.

Note This update was first included in the August 2015 security update for Internet Explorer (MS15-079).

Workaround

To work around this issue, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Delete the Internet Explorer Browsing History
