Important When you install this update (3013769) from Windows Update, update 3004545 is included in the installation.

The December 2014 update rollup for Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2 resolves issues and includes performance and reliability improvements. We recommend that you apply this update rollup as part of your regular maintenance routines. Check out the fixed issues in this update. Also notice that there is a prerequisite and a restart requirement for installing this update.

  • The computer may crash after you apply update rollup 3013769 or any subsequent rollup because of components in some third-party anti-virus products. When this occurs, you receive the following error message:

    SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (kl1.sys)


    Notes

    • This problem applies to 32-bit Windows 8.1 editions.

    • An installation of a Windows update typically creates a restore point to which the system can be rolled back in case the installation or the updates causes any problems.

    WorkaroundTo work around this problem, follow these steps:

    1. Restore your computer to an earlier state to roll back the update installation. To do this, follow these steps:

      1. Wait while your computer tries to restart. After two or more attempts, your system will start in “Automatic Repair” mode.

      2. On the Automatic Repair screen, click Advanced Options, and then click Troubleshoot.

      3. On the Troubleshoot menu, click Advanced Options.

      4. Tap or click System Restore, and then follow the instructions on the screen.

    2. Restart Windows, and then uninstall the third-party antivirus product. To do this, follow these steps:

      1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search. (If you are using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, and then click Search.)

      2. In the search box, type control panel, and then tap or click Control Panel.

      3. Under View by, select Large Icons, and then tap or click Programs and features.

      4. Tap or click the program, and then tap or click Uninstall.

      5. Follow the instructions on the screen.

    3. Optional: By default, Windows Defender is enabled. To verify this, follow these steps:

      1. Click Start, type defender in the search box, and then click Windows Defender in the results list.

      2. Follow the instructions on the screen.

    4. Reapply rollup KB 3013769. To do this, follow these steps:

      1. Open Windows Update by swiping in from the right edge of the screen (or point to the lower-right corner of the screen and move the mouse pointer up), tap or click Settings, tap or click Change PC settings, and then tap or click Update and recovery.

      2. Tap or click Check now, and then wait while Windows searches for the latest updates for your computer.

      3. If updates are found, tap or click Install updates.

      4. Under Optional, select update 3013769, and then tap or click Install.

  • Text for DNS events is not rendered in DNS Manager mmc snap-in after you install August 2014 update rollup for Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2 (2975719) or a later version of monthly updates on Windows Server 2012 R2-based DNS servers.

    WorkaroundTo work around this problem, view DNS events by using the Event Viewer and Computer Management snap-ins. 

  • Text for DNS events is not rendered in the Event Viewer and Computer Management snap-ins if December 2014 update rollup for Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2 (3013769) was installed, but October 2014 update rollup for Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2 (3995388) was not installed.

    ResolutionInstall update 3995388 before or after update 3013769 to prevent or resolve this problem.


How to obtain the update rollup

Method 1: Windows UpdateThis update is provided as an Optional update from Windows Update.

  1. Open Windows Update by swiping in from the right edge of the screen (or point to the lower-right corner of the screen and move the mouse pointer up), tap or click Settings, tap or click Change PC settings, and then tap or click Update and recovery.

  2. Tap or click Check now, and then wait while Windows looks for the latest updates for your computer.

  3. If updates are found, tap or click Install updates.

  4. Select update 3013769 under Optional, and then tap or click Install.

Note You might have to restart your computer to finish installing some updates. Save and close your files and apps before you restart so that you do not lose any work or data.
