Description of the security update for Outlook 2016: February 11, 2020

Applies to: Outlook 2016

This security update resolves a security feature bypass vulnerability that exists in Microsoft Outlook software if it incorrectly handles the parsing of URI formats. To learn more about the vulnerability, see Microsoft Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures CVE-2020-0696.

Note To apply this security update, you must have the release version of Outlook 2016 installed on the computer.

Be aware that the update in the Microsoft Download Center applies to the Microsoft Installer (.msi)-based edition of Office 2016. It doesn't apply to the Office 2016 Click-to-Run editions, such as Microsoft Office 365 Home (see What version of Office am I using?).

Improvements and fixes

This security update contains improvements and fixes for the following nonsecurity issues:
  • Adds the ability to prevent Outlook from connecting to a mailbox that uses basic authentication by using the DisableBasic registry key that's located in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\HTTP. To prevent basic authentication, set the value to 1. The default value is 0. If this value is set to 1, and if the mailbox supports only basic authentication, Outlook cannot connect to the mailbox.
  • Large blank spaces appear between the first and second columns in the contact item after an East Asian language pack is applied to Outlook.
  • Outlook may stop responding when you create a rule from a Skype for Business "missed conversation" message.
