FIX: Remote ad hoc queries that use OPENDATASOURCE produce an incorrect error message when the new OLE DB provider is used

Applies to: SQL Server 2016 DeveloperSQL Server 2016 EnterpriseSQL Server 2016 Enterprise Core

Consider the following scenario:
  • You use Microsoft SQL Server 2016 Service Pack 2 Cumulative Update 6.
  • The new OLE DB provider (MSOLEDBSQL) is used.
  • You run a remote ad hoc query by using the OPENDATASOURCE function to connect to remote data from OLE DB data sources.
  • The query contains an error, for example, a reference to non-existing table.
In this scenario, you notice that an incorrect error message is displayed when the query fails.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
