This document answers frequently asked questions on how AI is used in Skills and how it impacts you as a user

What is Skills?

Skills is an AI-powered service that helps organizations understand skills by delivering personalized skills-based experiences throughout Microsoft 365 applications for employees, business leaders, and HR.

What can Skills do?

Skills uses the user data available in M365 Graph and your Microsoft 365 profile to make AI-based suggestions on skills relevant to you based on your activity and role.

What are the intended uses for Skills?

Skills helps you with skill suggestions to personalize your Microsoft 365 experience. You can confirm, reject, and add skills. You can also opt out of suggestions.

HR analysts can view aggregate skills data (skills inferred by AI and confirmed by users) to provide into their organization's skills landscape

Knowledge administrators and global administrators can select from a pre-defined list of skills or upload their company skill library and role-to-skill mapping files for their organization.

How was Skill evaluated? What metrics are used to measure performance?

Microsoft is measuring confirmation and rejection rates of the skills suggested to users with a goal to improve the performance of AI suggestions.

What are the limitations of Skills? How can you minimize the impact of Skills limitations when using the system?

Skills generated by AI depend on the signals available to Microsoft, such as M365 profiles and activity. These signals may not be a comprehensive reflection of your skills or abilities.

Skills generates skills inferences that are restricted to an organization's skills library. This impacts the quality of skill inferences provided to users.

Even within the signals available to Microsoft, AI models may contain errors or inaccuracies based on a misinterpretation of the user's role or activity.

We aim for the system to be accurate in aggregate.

What operational factors and settings allow for effective and responsible use of Skills?

You can opt out of AI based skill suggestions.

You can also confirm and reject skill suggestions. AI generated data that presented to business decision makers on aggregate skills are always labeled as such.

Administrators can disable skill suggestions for the entire tenant, or for specific users or user groups.
