All new files checked-out in Microsoft 365Â check-out using the Office Document Cache. This enables offline editing of checked-out files and allows you to edit your checked-out files from more than one machine.
If you have a file checked-out to your local server drafts folder using an old version of the app and have lost access, you can still retrieve any changes that were not checked-in to SharePoint. Open the local copy of the file from the Server Drafts location to copy any changes you've made, then paste these changes into the checked-out file from SharePoint. Once done, you can check-in the file as normal.
Find the local server drafts location
-
Open the Microsoft 365 app that contains your checked-out file
-
On the File tab, select Options and choose Save. If you don't see the File menu, press Alt + F.Â
-
Under Offline editing options for document management server files, copy the file path in the text box labeled Server drafts location.
-
In your Microsoft 365 app, go to file Open, select Browse, paste the path into either the address bar or the File name field and press Enter. You'll find your file in that folder.
If you did not have any pending changes to check-in, simply re-open your SharePoint file and use it as normal.
