To display leading zeros, like in a zip code, create a custom number format. For example: Use 00000 for a five digit fixed-length number, or 000# for a variable length number prefaced by three zeros.

Right-click in a cell and select Format Cells.

On the Numbers tab, select Custom in the Category list.

In the Type box, type the custom format.
