When you type two dashes, Word automatically changes them to an em or en dash.

To turn this feature on or off, select the File menu, and select Options.

On the Proofing tab, select AutoCorrect Options and choose AutoFormat As You Type.

Check or clear Hyphens (--) with dash (–) and select OK.
Tip:Â Typing a letter or word followed by two dashes and another word will create the longer em dash. Typing a letter or word followed by a space and two dashes will create the shorter en dash.
