Note: This guidance is applicable only to Viva Engage admins.

Admins can manage community discovery when controversial or highly active niche communities dominate Home feeds and discovery emails for your users. For example, if your organization has an extremely active pet community, or a community that hosts long, controversial discussions, people who aren’t members might not want to receive those messages.

What does muting do?

  • If a user isn't a community member, conversations from that community won't appear in their Home Feed or in weekly discovery emails.

  • If a user is a community member, conversations appear in their Home Feed and in weekly discovery emails.

Mute a community

Note: Because this action doesn't notify the community owner, we suggest contacting the community’s representatives because a muting action can adversely impact community engagement.

  1. Open the community you want to mute for your network.

  2. Select the ... option in the community header.

  3. Select Mute for network.

  4. Select Continue.

Best practices

Use the Muting feature sparingly and reserve it for special cases. It's better to leave community involvement in the hands of end users, since they can mute an irrelevant community. The best way to manage conversation flow is to feature conversations to amplify positive content in your network. Special cases apply where the community certainly should exist, but it isn't desirable to have it appear in discovery for all users. For those cases, we recommend muting the community.

FAQ

Q: Can users still search and browse for muted communities?

A: Users can still find and navigate to these communities.

Q: Will the community owner be notified?

A: No. We suggest starting with a conversation before muting the community.

Q: Should I use this feature to mute communities not related to work?

A: That’s a personal decision, but research suggests social groups are beneficial at building a sense of belonging and social capital---both of which help people be more effective at work.
