The Loop component is a great way to collaborate right in your Microsoft Teams Free desktop chat. You can use the Loop component for real time collaboration ​​​​​​​to brainstorm, compile data, manage projects, or hold topic discussions in real time. When you edit it inline, your changes will appear instantly inside the chat message. Loop can get your team focused with task lists, progress trackers, voting tables, and more.

Review your privacy settings 

Your privacy settings can affect how you and your collaborators view and edit Loop in Teams Free.  These settings will apply to your chats and group chats. This includes how you create, collaborate, and view a Loop component in Microsoft Teams Free. 

​​​​​​​Collaboration in Loop according to privacy settings 

To unlock real time collaboration with Loop in Teams Free:

  • Email visibility must be set to Show in Teams Free privacy settings.

  • Participants must have 1:1 chats with each other.

If your email visibility is set to Hide:

  • Loop components in chats and group chats will appear as links and open on the web.

  • If the Loop is edited on the web, users will lose collaborative features in Loop, like inline editing.

View and update your Privacy settings 

You can go to Settings Settings button > Privacy Privacy settings button > Your Profile Teams new people button​​​​​​​> Manageprofile.  Under Manage profile, you can choose to Hide or Show your e-mail address. There you can manage your contact details by choosing Hide or Show. These settings will apply to your chats, group chats, and community. This includes how you create, collaborate, and view a Loop component in Microsoft Teams Free.

Privacy settings can be updated at any time. Loop features will update automatically based on your settings.

Send a Loop component 

Note: People without an active OneDrive account may have a delay when launching the component. 

  1. In the chat box, select Loop components Loop icon  .

  2. Select the type of component you want to insert into your message. You can choose from: ​​​​​​

    Table​​​​​​- Organize data in rows and columns

    Voting table- Collect votes or feedback from participants

    Code- Share and format code snippets

    Bulleted list- Create a list with bullet points

    Numbered list- Create an ordered list

    Kanban board- Visualize tasks across workflow stages

    Check list- Add checkboxes for task tracking

    Q&A Session- Capture and respond to questions

    Team Retrospective- Reflect on team performance and gather insights

    Task list- Assign and manage tasks with due dates

    Progress tracker- Monitor project milestones and completion status

  3. ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Enter content into the component. Depending on the privacy settings, you can also mention your contacts by typing their name or email address.​​​​​​​

  4. When ready, select Send Teams send button​​​​​​​.

    1. If all participant's email visibility is set to Show, users can make changes and view the Loop within the chat or message box. 

    2. If any participant's email visibility is set to Hide, Loop components in chats and group chats will appear as links and open in Teams on the web, limiting inline collaboration.

You can update your Teams Free privacy settings at any time. Loop features will update automatically based on your settings

Edit a Loop component 

  1. Click where you want to add or edit content and start typing.

  2. When editing, you can type / to insert things like the date or component. You can comment on existing text rather than edit it by typing //. The comment made is then attributed to you.

View and edit the file on Office.com 

Loop components are automatically saved to OneDrive once sent in chat. Here’s how to navigate from chat to the file on Office.com: 

  1. Select the linked filename at the top your Loop component.

  2. The file will open on Office.com, where you can view and co-edit the content.
