Ensure a Smooth and Safe Transition with Full Cloud Sync
Note: The preferred way to switch is by using the in-app migration dialog in OneNote for Windows 10, which guides you step by step and ensures no data loss. To use it, make sure you're on the latest version of OneNote for Windows 10.

Introduction
OneNote for Windows 10 will reach end of support on October 14, 2025, and become read-only the same day. To maintain uninterrupted access to your notes and take advantage of new AI-powered features, we recommend switching to OneNote on Windows, the fully supported version for Windows PCs.
This guide provides step-by-step instructions to help you safely migrate, ensuring all your notebooks are synced to the cloud and accessible across your devices.
Step 1: Sign in to All Your Accounts

Open OneNote for Windows 10.

Go to Settings (gear icon) > Accounts.

Confirm you’re signed into all accounts that contain your notebooks (personal, school, work).

Add any missing accounts and wait for notebooks to appear.
Step 2: Confirm All Notes Are Synced to the Cloud
For each open notebook:

Right click the notebook name in the left navigation pane.

Select “Sync”, then select either “Sync This Notebook” or “Sync All Notebooks”

Make sure the sync status shows “🔄” or “Up to date” message.

Step 3: Install OneNote on Windows

Go to the official Microsoft Store to download OneNote

Install and launch the app.

Sign in with the same Microsoft account(s) used in OneNote for Windows 10.

Use the Most Recently Used (MRU Notebook feature to quickly launch your notebooks.
Step 4: Open and Sync Your Notebooks in OneNote on Windows

Go to File > Open for additional notebooks

Select your OneDrive or SharePoint account and open your desired notebooks.
Step 5: Confirm Sync of Notebook on OneNote for Windows

Go to File > Info > View Sync Status.

Confirm all notebooks show “Up to date”.

Review all notes, sections, and pages.

Check for any missing content or recent updates. If contents are missing, follow this recovery guide.
Step 6: Uninstall OneNote for Windows 10
Once you've confirmed that all data is present and synced in OneNote on Windows:

Open Settings > Apps > Apps & Features.

Find OneNote for Windows 10, select it, and click Uninstall.
