In the message list, you can see a preview of each message's content, if you like.

On the View tab in classic Outlook, select Change View > Preview. Under Message Preview, choose the option you want:

To turn off message previews, select Off.

To turn them on, select 1 Line, 2 Lines, or 3 Lines.

Note: If you want to see messages in the reading pane, rather than having to open them in a separate window, see Use and configure the Reading Pane to preview messages.
