This information is for employees using Microsoft 365 through their organization.
Important: To keep Microsoft 365 apps working normally, an update is required by July 13, 2026. If your apps are not updated, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote will enter reduced functionality mode, where you can open and view files, but can’t edit, save or access full features. In most cases, updating your apps will prevent this issue.
Your files are safe — this is not a security issue. Your apps need an update to use the renewed certificate that verifies the license that keeps Microsoft 365 apps up-to-date and working correctly.Â
This issue only affects macOS and iOS devices. Windows and Android devices are not affected.
What you need to do
Check with your IT administrator
If your macOS or iOS device is managed by your organization, your IT administrator may already be deploying the required update. Contact your organization’s help desk to confirm whether the update is being pushed to your device.
Tip:Â Not sure whether your device is managed? On a Mac, go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Profiles. On iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > General > VPN & Device Management. If you have a management profile from your organization, your device is managed.
Try updating your apps
If your organization allows you to update apps, follow these steps:
On a Mac:
-
Open any Office app (such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, or OneNote).
-
In the menu bar, select Help > Check for Updates.

If Microsoft AutoUpdate opens, select Update or Update All.
-
After the update finishes, restart the app.

Open the App Store.
-
Tap your profile picture in the top of the app.
-
Scroll down and tap Update next to any Microsoft 365 app or tap Update All.
-
After updating, open the app and sign in if prompted.
