To provide you with the best experience, Microsoft 365 for Mac, Office 2021 for Mac, and Office 2019 for Mac supports the three most recent major versions of Apple's macOS.

Today, the three most recent major versions are macOS Monterey 12, macOS Big Sur 11, and macOS Catalina 10.15.

Note: As new major versions of macOS are made generally available, Microsoft will remove support for the oldest major version and support the newest and previous two major versions of macOS. Product functionality and feature availability may vary on older systems. For the best experience, use the latest major version of macOS along with the latest operating system updates.

For the most up-to-date macOS for your Office for Mac product, select your version below.

Starting with the forthcoming November 2022 update (16.67) macOS Big Sur 11 or later is required receive updates to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote. If you continue with an older version of macOS, your Office apps will still work, but you'll no longer receive any updates including security updates.

Upgrading your operating system to macOS Big Sur 11 or later will allow Office updates to be delivered for your apps. Note that new installs of Microsoft 365 for Mac will also require macOS Big Sur 11 or later.

The forthcoming October 2022 update (16.66) will be the last build to support macOS Catalina 10.15.

What if I don't update macOS to a supported version?

If you’re on an unsupported version of macOS, your Office apps will still work but you would no longer receive any updates including security updates. For example, if you’re on macOS Big Sur 11, but later you don’t update your macOS to a supported version when macOS Big Sur 11 is no longer supported, you won’t receive any updates of any kind.

As new major versions of macOS are released and older versions become unsupported, we highly recommend you continue to update your macOS to a supported version in order to receive mainstream support such as security updates as well as new features.

Is macOS Ventura 13 supported?

Apple has announced that macOS Ventura 13 will be made generally available (GA) sometime in October 2022. For the best experience with the new operating system, make sure that you have installed the latest updates for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote.

For the best experience with macOS Catalina 10.15, be sure to keep your Office apps up-to-date.
