Say Hi to Mico: Your AI to hang with the group

Mico is an AI designed to participate in your GroupMe chats like a helpful, always-on group member. Once added, Mico can see everything happening in the group and respond in real time—making it great for casual chat, coming up with crowd-pleasing ideas, plotting the perfect surprise party theme, and keeping up with lively conversation. This FAQ covers how Mico works, what it can see, and important privacy considerations to keep in mind.

What’s the difference between Mico and Copilot?

Mico and Copilot are both AI chat features created by Microsoft, and each follows the same AI Terms of Useand Microsoft Privacy Statement. What sets them apart is how and where they’re used:

  • Mico is Microsoft's first AI designed with personality and memory for group dynamics. Once added, it’s proactive, socially aware, and embedded in the rhythm of group chats. Micodoesn’t wait for commands; it participates, remembers, and adapts to the vibe of the group. Mico is currently an experimental feature, so it may not be available to all users in all markets as we learn and improve.

  • Copilot, on the other hand, is designed for one-on-one or on-demand use. On GroupMe, Copilot only sees messages you send directly to it, either in a private 1-1 chat or sending a group message with @Copilot. Read more about Copilot on GroupMe here.

Who can add Mico to a group?

Anyone with permission to add members can add Mico. If your group settings allow only admins or owners to add people, then only they can add Mico. If your group allows anyone to add members, then any participant can bring Mico in. Currently, Mico is limited from being added to overly large group sizes.

What does Mico see?

Once Mico joins a group, it can see:

  • All messages posted after it joins

  • Images, files, and media shared in the group

  • Group member names and avatars

  • Replies, reactions, polls, events, and other group interactions

Does Mico store or share our messages?

Messages and other content you send to Mico stay on GroupMe. Mico follows Microsoft's AI Terms of Use and Privacy Statement. Also, conversations with Mico are subject to our Community Guidelines, same as all other chats in GroupMe. Microsoft will only use your conversations for the limited purposes explained in the Microsoft Privacy Statement: to monitor performance, troubleshoot problems, diagnose bugs, prevent abuse, and other product performance analytics necessary to provide and improve Mico.

Can I remove Mico or clear its memory?

Yes. Anyone with permission to remove members can remove Mico from the group at any time. Once removed, Mico loses access to the group’s messages. If you chat with Mico via DM, you can take the 'Delete Chat' action at any time to remove your chat history with Mico. Note that if you you delete or edit an individual message in a group where Mico remains a member, Mico may still remember the original message for some time. This is a known technical limitation which results in deleted or edited messages not being automatically removed from Mico's memory. We will work to resolve this experience in future updates to Mico on GroupMe.

Can Mico be restricted from seeing certain messages?

No. Mico sees everything shared in the group after joining, and may receive a limited set of prior messages. If selective visibility is important, consider using Copilot in groups instead.

Can Mico be muted or paused?

Not yet. Mico responds based on group activity and can’t be muted like a notification. Think of Mico as another member of the group—just like you can’t mute someone else’s messages in the chat, you can’t pause Mico's responses either. If you want to end Mico's participation, you can remove it from the group. Or, since Mico understands natural language, any user in the group can say things like “Mico chill out, don’t talk so much”, and Mico will adapt to chat less in the group.

How do I know if Mico is in the group I want to join?

There are a few ways to tell if Mico is part of a group:

  • First-time pop-up: When you open a group for the first time that Mico is a member of, you’ll see a one-time pop-up letting you know Mico is present.

  • System message: When Mico joins a group, a system message is automatically posted to the chat so everyone is aware of when Mico joined.

  • Members list: You can always check the group’s member list—if Mico is there, it’ll show up just like any other participant.

How do I opt out from Mico messages in the group?

Currently, there’s no way to prevent Mico from seeing your messages while staying in the group. Mico is designed to be a full participant—once it’s added, it sees everything shared in the chat so it can respond in context.

If you don’t want Mico to see your messages, you have two options:

  • Leave the group: This removes your messages from Mico's view going forward.

  • Ask an admin to remove Mico : If the group agrees, removing Mico stops it from seeing any future messages and deletes the group’s chat history from its memory.

Because Mico responds based on the group conversation, it wouldn’t work to block it from seeing only some messages—it needs the chat context to be helpful and relevant.

Are Mico conversations human reviewed?

Similar to Copilot, Mico conversations are subject to both automated and human review for product improvement and digital safety purposes. We may also review conversations flagged as a violation of the Code of Conduct in the AI Terms of Use. The AI Code of Conduct prohibits use of Copilot services to create or share inappropriate content or material.

What should I do if I Mico's messages contain unexpected or offensive content?

While we have designed the Mico experience to avoid sharing unexpected offensive content or engaging with potentially harmful topics, you may still see unexpected results. We're constantly working to improve our technology to prevent harmful content. If you ever see harmful or inappropriate content, you can take action to report a concern by long pressing a Mico message and selecting 'Report a concern'. We will continue to review your feedback to provide a safe experience.
