Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You connect a computer to an IEEE 802.1X authenticated network through an 802.1x enabled device, such as a Voice over IP (VOIP) telephone.

  • You put the computer into hibernation (system power state S4) or into sleep (system power state S3).

  • You resume the computer.

In this scenario, the computer does not reconnect to the same authenticated Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN). Instead, the computer connects to an isolated network. Note This issue does not occur if you directly connect the computer to an 802.1X-enabled switch.

Resolution

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. To apply this hotfix, your computer must be running one of the following operating systems:

Note This issue also occurs in Windows XP. Workaround

To work around this issue, follow these steps:

  • Restart the computer.

  • Reset the network adapter. To do this, start an elevated command prompt, type netsh lan reconnect, and then press Enter.

  • Unplug and then reconnect the network cable.

  • Use a third-party network driver, such as Cisco DNE. If a third-party driver is installed, this driver changes the network behavior and enables automatic authentication.
