Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have an NTFS volume that is flagged as dirty in Windows 8.1 or Windows Server 2012 R2. For example, you receive the following error message for the volume:

    There's a problem with this drive. Scan the drive now and fix it.

  • You run the Check Disk Tool (CHKDSK) to fix the drive. However, no issues are found.

  • Immediately after CHKDSK is finished, the volume is reported as "Clean."

  • You restart the system. Or, you unmount and then remount the volume.

In this scenario, the volume is reported as "Online Scan Needed," and Windows runs CHKDSK again.Note This problem occurs every time that you restart the system or unmount and then remount the volume.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, we have released hotfixes and updates for Windows 8.1 or Windows Server 2012 R2.The update rollup fixes many other issues in addition to the issue that the hotfix fixes. We recommend that you use the update rollup. The update rollup is larger than the hotfix. Therefore, the update rollup takes longer to download.

Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Prerequisites

To apply this update, you must first have update 2919355 installed in Windows 8.1 or Windows Server 2012 R2.

Restart requirement

You do not have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

Hotfix replacement information

This hotfix does not replace any previously released hotfix.

The dates and the times for these files on your local computer are displayed in your local time together with your current daylight saving time (DST) bias.
