When you launch Office apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) in elevated mode (e.g., Run as administrator), they cannot properly communicate with the OneDrive client running in user mode. This results in Office treating the document as a local file, disabling features such as AutoSave, co-authoring, and Copilot.

Note: If you came to this page by clicking on a link from a in-app message in Word, Excel or PowerPoint App, you may be running the Office app in elevated mode. Follow this link to learn more about in-app messages.

Scenarios Where Office Apps Are Launched Elevated

  • Scenario 1: You right-click Word, Excel, or PowerPoint and select Run as administrator.

  • Scenario 2: Office is indirectly launched elevated (e.g., from an elevated Command Prompt or elevated installer).

  • Scenario 3: App compatibility settings force elevation for Office executables.

Why This Happens

Office needs to determine if a file is backed up by OneDrive and obtain cloud metadata. When Office is started elevated, it cannot access the cloud metadata from OneDrive, causing Office to open the file without cloud capabilities. As a result, features like AutoSave, co-authoring, and Copilot become unavailable.

Symptoms of This Issue

  • The AutoSave toggle is disabled for files stored in OneDrive or SharePoint.

  • The Save icon shows no sync arrows; saving may prompt you to sign in again or create duplicates.

  • Co-authoring presence and Copilot features do not appear for the document.

  • The file opens but behaves like a local document.

How to Resolve This Issue

To ensure that Office apps work correctly with OneDrive, do not run Office in elevated mode. Follow these steps to launch Office apps in standard user mode:

  1. Close all Office apps.

  2. Start apps from the Start menu or taskbar normally (do not use Run as administrator).

  3. If you previously set forced elevation:

    • Right-click the app shortcut, select Properties, go to the Compatibility tab, and ensure that Run this program as an administrator is unchecked.

    • Repeat this for Word (WINWORD.EXE), Excel (EXCEL.EXE), PowerPoint (POWERPNT.EXE), and any custom shortcuts.

  4. Open a file located in OneDrive with the Word, Excel, or PowerPoint Windows Desktop App.

  5. Confirm that AutoSave is on, the save icon shows sync arrows, and co-authoring presence and Copilot are available.

  6. If issues persist, sign out and sign back in to OneDrive, then restart OneDrive.exe and Office.

Prevention and Best Practices

  • Avoid launching Office from elevated shells.

  • Run administrative tasks (e.g., scripts, installers) separately from your Office session.

  • Ensure OneDrive is signed in and functioning properly, and keep Office updated.
