Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You are in one of the following Microsoft Exchange Server environments that have multiple domains (parent domains and child domains):

    • One Exchange Server 2013 is in Parent Domain, another Exchange Server 2013 and Exchange Server 2010 are in Child Domain.

    • Exchange Server 2010 is in Parent Domain, and Exchange Server 2013 is in Child Domain.

    • Exchange Server 2013 is in Parent Domain, and Exchange Server 2010 is in Child Domain.

  • You run the New-MigrationBatch request from Exchange Admin Console (EAC) or Exchange Management Shell (EMS) to migrate mailboxes from Exchange Server 2010 to Exchange Server 2013.

In this scenario, the request fails, and you receive the following error message:

Error: MigrationTransientException: The operation couldn‎'t be performed because object ‎'Child Domain's User Mailbox‎' couldn‎'t be found on ‎'Parent Domain's DC Name‎'.

Cause

This issue occurs because the scope is set to local domain scope when you retrieve the mailbox to be moved from Active Directory. Therefore, the user object cannot be found.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, install Cumulative Update 7 for Exchange Server 2013.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
