Excel for Microsoft 365

Editing with Copilot in Excel helps you build, edit, and analyze workbooks side by side with Copilot. Copilot in Excel supports working with Claude AI models from Anthropic, and Chat GPT models from Open AI for making changes to your workbooks directly through Copilot. 

Note: Using the model switcher when editing with Copilot in Excel requires a commercial Microsoft 365 Copilot subscription or a Microsoft 365 Premium subscription.

Using Claude 

Note: For enterprise customers, your admin must enable Anthropic as a Microsoft sub-processor in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center before you can use Claude for making edits with Copilot in Excel. 

  1. Open Excel and sign in to your Microsoft 365 account.

  2. Select Home > Copilot to open the pane.

  3. When you open Copilot, editing is on by default. You’ll know Copilot is ready to edit if the Excel selector appears in the chat box.Toggle for switching between edit mode and chat mode ​​​​​

  4. Select the AI model switcher and choose a model from the list. You can also choose Auto and let Copilot automatically select the right model for you. The model switcher may be collapsed into the settings menu.

  5. Describe what you’d like to create or edit in the input field.

Notes and Limitations

Your model choice is only for the active session. When you close Excel or end your session, Copilot reverts to the default Generative AI Model for Microsoft 365.
