Introduction

Appraiser is the Windows component that evaluates a Windows Server 2012 R2 or Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1) system for compatibility with the latest version of Windows 10. Then, it reports potential compatibility issues to Microsoft. Appraiser runs daily on the system and during the setup process to make sure that there are no update preventing issues. Appraiser helps Microsoft to determine device compatibility and safeguards the system for all Windows updates. There is no functionality changes contained in this update to prompt you to upgrade.

How to get this compatibility update

This compatibility update is included in the following updates:

  • For Windows Server 2012 R2, see update KB 4520012

  • For Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, see update KB 4519972

After you install this update, systems that opted in to data collection by using the CommercialDataOptIn (CDO) registry setting will start to send Appraiser related data to Microsoft.

More information

The DataCollection registry key controls whether diagnostic data is sent to Microsoft after the Appraiser’s scheduled task runs. To Opt-in to CDO, an IT administrator must specifically add the CommercialDataOptIn registry key to the servers. For more information about CDO, see Windows Customer Data Opt-in.

When CDO is opted in, the following sequence of events occur:

  1. Appraiser Maintenance scheduled task runs

  2. CompatTelRunner.exe runs

  3. Appraiser\Application\Device Inventory runs

  4. Telemetry is sent to Microsoft

When CDO is not opted in, the following sequence of events occur:

  1. Appraiser Maintenance scheduled task runs

  2. CompatTelRunner.exe runs

  3. CompatTelRunner exits

  4. No Appraiser-related data is collected and no telemetry is sent to Microsoft
