Symptoms

Assume that you have a computer that uses the StorAHCI driver on non-hybrid Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) hard disks. The operating system is in one of the following builds or a later build:

  • 9870.0.14022-1912 fbl_release

  • 9870.0.141022-1846 winmain

In this situation, the computer cannot start or it cannot be resumed from sleep.

Cause

This problem occurs because the StorAHCI driver enables the Power-Up in Standby (PUIS) feature for non-hybrid SATA disks. However, the BIOS does not send a spin-up command to restore disk settings or to start from the hard disks.

Resolution

This compatibility update is offered when you upgrade to Windows 10 Technical Preview or Windows Server Technical Preview.

Note After you apply this update, StorAHCI driver does not enable the PUIS feature for non-hybrid SATA disks.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

More Information

The English (United States) version of this software update installs files that have the attributes that are listed in the following tables. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). Be aware that dates and times for these files on your local computer are displayed in your local time and with your current daylight saving time bias. The dates and times may also change when you perform certain operations on the files.

The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information" section. MUM, MANIFEST, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are very important to maintain the state of the updated components. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.

About PUISPUIS is a specific hard disk drive (HDD) feature that enables the drive to spin up only when it is required by a command, instead of when the computer is turned on. This feature helps save energy and enables staggered spin-up times for multiple hard disk drives.
