Applies ToOutlook Social Connector Beta

INTRODUCTION

Microsoft has released an update for the Microsoft Outlook Social Connector. This article lists the changes that are in the update.

MORE INFORMATION

When you apply this update to the Outlook Social Connector (OSC), the previous settings for social network providers is not migrated. This is because the storage location for these settings has changed. Also, when Outlook requests information about recipients from a social network provider, the recipients’ email addresses is hashed. In this situation, only the hash is sent to the social network.

Profile specific settings

The settings for social network providers from version 1.0 of the OSC will not be migrated during the upgrade to version 1.1. The storage location for these settings has changed. The settings are now stored on a per-Outlook profile basis. This change enables distinct social network settings and connections for each Outlook profile. Social network settings are stored under the following profile-specific registry subkey:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\<ProfileName>\{SocialNetworkGuid} Note The GUID for the social network (SocialNetworkGuid) is generated dynamically by the OSC.

On-demand hashed email addresses

When you view an email message, the OSC may ask the social network for information about everyone on the To and the Cc lines of the message. This occurs if on-demand user lookup is implemented by that social network provider. The email addresses of those people are hashed before they are sent to the social network. This is done to prevent disclosure of email addresses. To support on-demand lookups, the social networks must support hashed email addresses as outlined in the OSC SDK.
